Thai National Costumes

On 1960 Her Majesty Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother had to follow His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great to visit the United States of America and Europe officially. She thought that even though Thailand had the uniqueness and culture reflected in the costume, Thai ladies did not have a definite national costume, so she gave instruction to research Thai national costumes of ladies in various eras from Sukhothai, Ayutthaya, and Rattanakosin to adjust and improve the design appropriately so that she can use the new design as Thai national costume during the visits in foreign countries that time. As a result, Thailand the national costumes for ladies called “Thai National Costumes”.

Thai Chakraphad costume

Thai Chakraphad costume The costume is named after the Chakraphat Phiman Throne Hall. It is used in royal duties at night. The costume has one shoulder open top wrapped in two layers. The inner layer is usually a pleated sabai covered with shawl. The skirt is gold fabric with front pleats. It looks like a Thai Chakri costume, fastened with a belt and decorated with beautiful accessories.

Thai Dusit costume

The costume is named after the Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall. It is used at night ceremonies. The costume is made of silk or gold fabric. The skirt is pleated in the front. The shirt has wide round neck with no sleeves embroided with silver or gold threads or beads, fastened with a Thai style belt.

Thai Siwalai costume

The costume is named after the Siwalai Throne Hall. It is used in royal ceremonies both in day and night. It looks like Thai Boromphiman costume but draped over with another layer of shirt. It is used in royal ceremonies or ceremonies that is required full rank costume.

Thai Chakri costume

The costume is named after the Chakri Maha Prasat Throne Hall. It is used in night ceremonies. The costume has one shoulder open top with finished sabai that can be either embroidered or not embroidered, sewn to the bottom which is a skirt pleated in front. The skirt can be made of silk with gold all over the piece or only the base, fastened with a Thai style belt.

Thai Reun-ton costume

Thai Reun-ton costume The costume is named after Reun-ton. It is used in informal occasions. The costume was made with cotton or silk. It looks like a skirt long to the ankle. The shirt is round neck with three-quarter sleeves. The chest area is split with five buttons. There are a few ornaments used and the costume can be used for many occasions, such as making merit and auspicious event.

Thai Boromphiman costume

The costume is named after the Boromphiman Throne Hall. It is used in royal ceremonies and night ceremonies. The shirt has long sleeves and a round neck with a stand collar. The skirt has front pleats sewn with silk mixed with gold color or full gold color. The shirt and skirt may be sewn together as one piece with a Thai style belt.

Thai Chitralada costume

Thai Chitralada costume The costume is named after Chitralada Royal Villa. The costume is used for ceremonies in the daytime. It is similar to Thai Reun-ton costume. The difference is the stand collar and long sleeves to the wrist. The skirt is made of silk with Yok Dok pattern throughout the piece. The accessories can be worn as appropriate.

Thai Amarintra costume

The costume is named after Amarin Winitchai Hall. The costume is used in royal ceremonies and night events. It looks like Thai Chitralada costume, but it is made of silk mixed with gold color or full gold color. all over the body. The beautiful accessories are worn with the costume.
